Probus is an Association of active retirees who join together in Clubs, the basic purpose of which is to provide regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. All Clubs are sponsored by Rotary Clubs (Essendon Central Combined Probus is sponsored by Rotary Club of Essendon). On forming they become self governing but remain within limits of their constitution.

Membership: As Essendon Central Probus is now a "Combined" Club (i.e.men & women), membership is open to men, women & couples of good character, who have had some measure of responsibility or achievement in any field of worthy endeavour.

A Brief History: Probus originated in the U.K. in 1965, the first Australian Club was formed in 1976, Essendon Central Probus Club was formed in 1990. Probus has filled a need for today’s active retirees, so much so that the growth has been phenomenal. It is now a world wide movement in 22 countries

The Emphasis is on Clubs:  Probus Clubs are simple in structure - they are free from the constraints & obligations of service Clubs; membership cost is minimal (Essendon Central Combined is $30 pa); their focus is mainly directed at providing an opportunity to extend  acquaintances and interests; and they seek members compatible with one another.

Club Structure: Whilst Probus Clubs are self governing, they must adhere to a basic set of rules of operation in order to preserve their integrity and reputation – thus they are non political and non sectarian, they are non profit making and non fundraising, and as their office bearers change annually they provide for a variety of leadership.
